Celebrating Myall’s 3rd Birthday

This January marks the milestone of our 3rd birthday. Reflecting over the last three years, I’ve been thinking about what a ride it has been. Full of highs and lows and everything in between, passion has been what has bound us together and inspired us to keep going through difficult times. It caused me to think about some “Myall-stones” which I would love to share with you.

The Myall Vision

With all my years (25+!) working in finance, I experienced firsthand the sedentary and stressful nature of working in corporate office environments. Moving internationally and interstate several times for work, to Japan, Brisbane and Melbourne, I found my regular practice of yoga, Pilates and other health rituals kept me grounded and motivated to show up as my best self. This inspired my vision of creating a wellbeing sanctuary in the heart of the Perth CBD to support the community of busy working people to cultivate a regular self-care practice. By making it affordable, easily accessible, and desirable, my vision was to create an oasis for office workers and city dwellers to take a break from their work and lives to improve their wellbeing.

After two years of research and development, the perfect space was secured, construction started several months later, and my vision began to come to life. Myall Yoga & Wellbeing Studio was born, named in honour of my mum who would have turned 90 yesterday, and officially opened its door on the 7th of January 2019.

Our Cherished Members & Clients

Myall’s first member was Anna, fondly known as the smiling face of Myall. Anna graciously starred in our first photo shoot with our incredible photographer, Sabine Albers! Spreading the word quickly to her friends, Anna brought her colleague along, Nicki, who also became a member and is still a regular at the studio. To name just a few of our valued members and clients:

Our Wellbeing Offerings

One month after opening, on the 1st of February 2019, our first remedial massage therapist, Mat began treating a steady stream of regular clientele. Shortly after in April 2019, our beloved massage therapists Melanie and Jason came on board. Their experience, knowledge, healing energy, and passion was next to none, and they soon also became well-loved members of the Myall family. We’ve since introduced different styles of massage, including lymphatic drainage and hot stone massage, and have recently added a therapeutic infrared sauna to our studio which perfectly complements a regular massage ritual.

Needless to say, our first 12 months as a state of the art and purposefully designed yoga and wellbeing studio in the heart of the hustle and bustle of the Perth CBD offered lots of opportunities to experiment, trial and grow our offering to what it is today. Our class timetable is always being adapted and improved to offer a variety of yoga classes and styles, Pilates, meditation, sound healing.

Our Ever-Evolving Team

We’ve been privileged to welcome a variety of Perth-based and world-renowned instructors into our space, offering yoga classes and sound healing experiences, including Tenille Bentley, Claudia Scalisi, Kylie Pearsall, Luke van den Hoek, Donna Zaffino, Simone Dodd and Eric Schwarz. Suffice to say, 2019 was a rewarding and extremely busy year for Myall Wellbeing and the team, with a special mention to Fern, Mikaela, Michelle and Tanaya, who have been with us since we opened, and continue to share their inspiring energy with us.

The Lows

As many other small business owners would have felt, 2020 was a year of unprecedented change. Over the course of a few weeks, the arrival of COVID-19 to Australia meant many small businesses were forced to shut down and as a result, we needed to adapt. From this, our 12-week Wellbeing Project, in collaboration with Kelly Dalby was born and offered online via Zoom, as a way of staying connected from home. Offering a daily timetable of Pilates, yoga and meditation classes, Fern, Mikaela, Tom, Guillaume and Kelly graciously live-streamed their classes from home in a bid to continue to inspire and support our Myall community through the uncertainties of this new way of life.

With the easing of restrictions, we reopened our studio in May 2020 continuing our Livestream classes and have since been riding the same rollercoaster of rapid lockdowns and restrictions, like everyone else worldwide. Our team’s ability to respond with courage and curiosity has held us in good stead. The support we have exchanged with our community has helped Myall to remain as a sanctuary and welcoming space for everyone, during these challenging times, when focusing on wellbeing is more important than ever.

The Highs

Over the course of three years, we’ve been involved in numerous events and activations, learnt lots and had fun along the way. We were fortunate to have hosted workshops and events with Stuart Watkins, Haydn Shadforth and Natalie from the Yoga Alchemy, Cecily from the US Yoga Detour, as well as Kate and Donna from our very own Perth-based, Yoga Vine.

Our regular Yoga and Wine evenings offered an opportunity for our growing community to form a sense of belonging with those they practised so closely with and were in popular demand especially when delicious pizzas from Lalla Roohk were involved. We hosted yoga and wellbeing workshops, hikes, and retreats in collaboration with CEACEA Swimwear, Modern Day Woman, Bare and Wilde, Green Goodness Co., Lululemon, The Hike Collective and Cape to Cape Tours, many of which we have continued a strong relationship with.

Seeing people in the community come together to join us for a yoga class for a good cause, has brought so much joy to us and we hold these memories close to our hearts. We’ve raised funds for Alzheimer’s Association, the Charlie Teo Foundation, the Cat Haven, supported RU OK Day, and various communities affected by natural disasters such as bushfires and flooding.

Myall Today

Despite setbacks and challenges, we’re proud of our journey, as well as our clients who have been on the ride with us every step of the way. We can say with full assurance that we’re on a continual journey of growth and we look forward to another year of learning and shared experiences. In the meantime, we reflect on where we’ve been and how far we’ve come after delivering:

3900+ In-studio classes
500+ Virtual classes
1800+ Massage appointments
200+ Community classes
500+ Corporate sessions

None of this would be possible without our passionate team, both past and present, which today includes; 13 yoga and Pilates instructors (Fern, Shane, Mikaela, Tanaya, Michelle, Brett, Chelsea, Jason, Kelly, Christie, Ellie, Amy and Jess), 3 Massage Therapists (Mel, Jason and Yumi) our Studio Manager (Shane), our Marketing Team (Gabby, Remy and Chelsea), and our back of house support (Ed).

Gratitude

It’s a dream to see Myall Wellbeing and the beautiful community we’ve become.

Our therapists, instructors and the growing team have played a huge part in this. Their endless support, passion and commitment are forever appreciated.

Most of all our wonderful members and clients who continue to show up for regular classes in-studio and online, or massage and infrared sauna appointments, with a smiling face and enthusiasm continue to inspire us.

In the whirlwind of the last several years, we couldn’t have asked for a better community to be surrounded by.

A BIG thank you to each one of you for your loyalty, uplifting energy and most of all friendship.

We look forward to sharing this space as it continues to evolve with you all and hope to see everyone thrive here for many years to come.

It’s my life, it’s my time to thrive #igivemyall

With heartfelt gratitude from Emma, and the Myall Team.
